General Information
- Workshops are open to all educators, however preference is given to educators in the Intermediate Unit 8 service area (districts in Bedford, Blair, Cambria and Somerset Counties) who are employed full-time, part-time or on a substitute basis. Preference will be given to district teachers then substitutes and IU 8 staff.
- Registrants will receive a confirmation post card prior to the session. If a session is full, registrants will receive a post card indicating that they have been placed on a waiting list.
- IU 8 reserves the right to cancel a session due to low enrollment {please refer to the refund policy for refund information}. Registrants will be notified if their session has been cancelled.
- IU 8 staff registering for sessions must have their supervisor sign the registration form and indicate the appropriate budget/fund to charge the registration fee to.

- Directions to session sites are included in this packet.
- Registration deadline is June 15, 2012 – unless otherwise noted. Registrations will be accepted after the deadline for sessions with seats remaining.
Payment and Refunds
Refund/Cancellation Policy
Full Refund – A full refund (100%) will be issued if this event is canceled by the IU due to low enrollment. A full refund (100%) will be issued if a participant cancels at least one week (7 days) prior to the event.
No Refund – No refunds will be issued for cancellations by the participant with less than 7 days’ notice, or if the participant simply does not attend. The registration fee will be used to pay for presenter fees, meals, materials and other costs associated with the training or workshop.
When to expect a refund – Refund checks will not be issued until after all summer trainings. You may expect a refund in September or October.
- Districts paying a registration fee may be invoiced. If a district is to be invoiced a district administrator must sign the registration form indicating approval for invoicing.
- If a district is not paying the registration fee then payment must accompany registration.
- Please make checks payable to: Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8.
- Registration fees listed with the session descriptors are for educators within the IU 8 service area. If you are an educator outside of the IU 8 service area and are interested in attending please add $15 to the listed registration fee.
Act 48
- Act 48 hours will be awarded for workshops based on the number of contact hours for each workshop attended (lunch/breaks is not counted). Participants will receive credit only for those hours in attendance.
- A full day session will be credited up to 5 hours. A half day session will be credited up to 3 hours.
- IU 8 will submit participant hours to the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Once hours are submitted to PDE, participants will receive a letter, indicating award of Act 48 hours.
- Act 48 forms for non-IU 8 staff will be distributed at the session and must be submitted at the session or within 5 days to the act 48 office. Forms that are incomplete or not submitted within that time frame will not be processed.
- IU 8 staff must bring a pre-approved Act 48/in-service form to the training. Forms are to be turned in at the session or within 5 days to the act 48 office. Forms not returned within that time frame will not be processed.
- NOTE: Effective January 1, 2008, the Act 48 Requirements for School and System Leaders have changed for persons who are working in the following seven positions: Principal and Assistant Principal, Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, Executive Director and Assistant Executive Director, and AVTS Director. CHANGE: ACTIVITY HOURS DO NOT MEET THE NEW REQUIREMENTS; however, they will apply to other certificates.
